Global Warming

  • Feb. 2nd, 2007 at 12:49 PM

The sheer arrogance of the human race continues to astound me. This planet has been around for approximately 4.6 billion years. Our few million years of existence is nothing in comparison. To think that we could affect the planet in such a way simply highlights man's inflated sense of self importance.

Don't get me wrong, I am by no means denying that global warming is a serious threat. I just refuse to believe that anything we have done or are going to do will have any noticeable effect on the planet.

Earth has been going through cycles of yo-yoing temperatures all throughout its history. For example, 180 million years ago the temperatures on earth rapidly shot up by about 5 Celsius. The cause of this is thought to have been a sudden release of huge amounts of Methane from the sea bed. Evidently, that is not the case this time around but it does show that the planet has ways of causing global warming on its own.

It also has ways of sorting it out again. After the Methane warming, the weathering of rocks on the planets surface increased by at least 400%. The rock erosion caused by this leached chemicals such as calcium and magnesium into the oceans. Calcium combined with CO2, for instance, would have caused the precipitation of calcium carbonate. This process of CO2 consumption would have lowered levels of the greenhouse gas on a global scale. Over a period of 150,000 years, the Earth returned to normal and life began to flourish once again.

I do not believe that there is anything we can do to stop the warming of the planet. I do, however, believe that the planet will recover in time. Whether or not mankind will be around to witness this remains to be seen.
